1. What schools are eligible? Any Cum Laude member
school may submit one entry.
2. How is that entry chosen? By the Cum Laude Chapter
at that school.
3. Can the 'Paper' be from any subject? Yes.
4. What about a paper in a foreign language, something very
technical or poetry?
That's fine. The judging process will handle all
submissions.
5. Must the author have been inducted into the Cum Laude
Society?
No, but that person's school must have an active chapter of
Cum Laude. Any Grade 9-12 student at a school with a Cum Laude
chapter may have his 'paper' entered as that school's
selection.
6. Might the author be someone who may not ever be inducted
into Cum Laude?
Yes, as long as that person's school has an active chapter of
Cum Laude. Any Grade 9-12 student at a school with a Cum Laude
chapter may have his 'paper' entered as that school's
selection.
7. Can the paper be from last year?
No, it must have been written for the current school year
(2003-2004).
8. What about a tie vote at our school?
The local Cum Laude Chapter is to solve. One submission per
school is the maximum.
9. Can anyone add to the paper in any way? No.
10. Should we remove any grading or correction marks?
Yes, please. That will not be considered 're-writing'. When
the papers are submitted to the national Cum Laude office, all
identifying marks will be removed.
11. I can't find the appropriate forms to send with our
entry.
They may be downloaded from the Society's web page: www.
cumlaudesociety.org
12. Can we submit an audio-visual entry, or a work of art,
ex. a painting?
No, the work must be a scholarly 'paper', per se. A written
work about art would be eligible, however. N. B., Musical
compositins will be considered.
13. Can the paper have been published elsewhere first
(i.e., our school literary magazine)?
Yes. Previous publication is not prohibited in any way.
14. Can the original entry be returned? It has beautiful
color photographs, and we hate to make a black and white copy.
Yes. If the application includes a self-addressed stamped
envelope/container, we will return the original work. It may need
to be copied as a part of the adjudication process - district
selections will be copied and sent to all officers as we pick a
national designee next November.
15. Our students write (long-hand) essays in class, and I'd
like to submit one of these. Can it be typed?
Yes, provided no changes are made (content, grammar, et
al).
16. Can I tell about the assignment that led to the writing
of this paper?
Yes. There is a place on the submission form (sent to all
Chapter Secretaries) where a brief description of the assignment
can be noted.
